Windows 10 > Start Menu Button stopped working (October 2017) – after the recent Windows Fall Update ???
Here are some different methods to REPAIR it !!!
This first section applies to ‘All About Backup Inc.‘ clients – for those which are not our clients yet > scroll-down to the ‘Second Section’:
Microsoft/Windows Repair method #1.:
- Locate the ‘Taskmgr’ icon.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on ‘Taskmgr’ – a menu window will appear.
- If you do not see a ‘Processes’ tab – you need to locate ‘More details’ & ‘Single/Left click’ on it to select it.
- Otherwise locate ‘Processes’ tab & find a ‘Background process’ named ‘Windows Shell Experience Host‘.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on the ‘Windows Shell Experience Host’ to select it.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘End Task’ – bottom right corner of window. This process will automatically restart & should then repair the ‘Start Button Menu’ issue.

If the previous method did not work – try this method:
Microsoft/Windows Repair method #2.:
- Locate ‘This PC’ & ‘Double/Left click’ on it.
- Locate the ‘C’ drive & ‘Double/Left click’ on it.
- Locate the ‘Windows’ folder & ‘Double/Left click’ on it.
- Locate the ‘System32’ folder & ‘Double/Left click’ on it.
- Locate ‘Cmd’ exe file & ‘Single/Right click’ on it – a pop-up menu appears.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Run as Administrator’.
- A Command prompt window appears – type in ‘Powershell’
- Now type the following:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”} - Then press ‘Enter’ key to start the repair/reload process.
- Await for it to finish & then perform a ‘Restart’ using the ‘RED‘ Power button.
- Upon signing-in – the Start Menu button should now operate.

If the previous method still did not work, then try this last possibility – you may want to print these Classic-Shell install directions. This is because the browser you are using to read this information will need to be closed in-order to complete the installation of the Classic-Shell program.
Classic-Shell method #3. – not made by Microsoft, but has been working for Windows 10x64bit or x86 (32bit) computer users:
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ClassicShellSetup_4_3_1 (Oct.20-2017)
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Save’ into your downloads folder.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on the file to ‘Open’ it using 7-zip to extract/unzip the file.
- ’Single/Left click’ on the unzipped ‘ClassicShellSetup_4_3_1’ to select the program.
- Then while pointing on the program – ‘Single/Right click’ on it.
- A pop-up menu appears – ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Run as Administrator’.
- Program will begin install process – follow directions.
- When install completes – ‘Double/Left click’ on ‘This PC’.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on ‘C:’ drive.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on ‘Program Files’.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on ‘Classic Shell’.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on ‘Start Menu Settings’.
- Settings Menu Window appears – ‘Single/Left click’ on the style you prefer.
- ‘Single/Left click’ in the box to the left of ‘Replace Start Button’.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on a ‘Start Menu button’ you would now prefer to use.
- ‘Close’ all open windows – by ‘Single/Left clicking’ on the upper-right corner ‘X’.
- To test – ‘Single/Left click’ on the ‘Start Menu button’.
- Settings Menu Window may re-appear – if so just ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘OK’ to close. If it re-re-appears again – try another ‘Single/Left click’ on the ‘Start Menu Button’ to bring up the proper ‘Start Menu’ info window you were use to seeing in the past.

Microsoft/Windows Repair method #1.:
- Press and hold down the following 2 keys ‘Ctrl (Control) & Alt (Alternate)’ – while holding them down press the ‘Del (Delete)’ key & then release all keys.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Task Manager’ to select.
- Task Manager menu window then appears – you now need to view all possible tabs.
- To do so, you need to locate in the bottom left corner the ‘More details’ button – ‘Single/Left click’ on the ‘More details’ button to select it.
- A larger ‘Task Manager’ menu window appears, locate the ‘Processes’ tab – then locate the ‘Background process’ named ‘Windows Shell Experience Host‘.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on the ‘Windows Shell Experience Host’ to select it.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘End Task’ – this process will automatically restart & should repair the ‘Start Button Menu’ issue.

- Press & hold down the ‘CTRL’ & the ‘SHIFT’ keys, while holding them press the ‘ESC (Escape)’ key – ‘Task Manager’ window appears.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on File – a drop-down menu appears.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Run new task’.
- ‘Single/Left click’ in the box next to ‘Create this task with administrative privileges’.
- Now ‘Single/Left click’ in the long empty box located to the right of ‘Open’.
- Type ‘Cmd’ into that box & then ‘Single/Left click’ on the ‘OK’ button.
- A Command prompt window appears – type in ‘Powershell’.
- Now type in the following:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”} - Then press the ‘Enter’ key to start the repair/reload process.
- Await for it to finish & then perform a ‘Shutdown’.
To perform a ‘Shutdown’ process do the following:

- ‘Single/Left click’ on File – a drop-down menu appears.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Run new task’.

- Now ‘Single/Left click’ in the long empty box located to the right of ‘Open’.
- Type ‘Cmd’ into that box & then ‘Single/Left click’ on the ‘OK’ button.
- A Command prompt window appears – type in ‘cd\Windows\System32’ & press the ‘Enter’ key.
- Then type in ‘Shutdown /t 1 /f /s ‘ & press the ‘Enter’ key – the computer should begin the ‘Shutdown’ process.
- When the computer is ‘Powered-Off’ – count to ’10’ & power it back ‘On’.
When your user account is signed in – the ‘Start Menu Button’ should now be operational in the bottom left-corner.

If the previous method still did not work, then try this last possibility.
You need to first have the 7-Zip program installed.
7-Zip compression software installation:
- ‘Single/Left click’ on 7zip-v4_6_5
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ’Save’ (Downloads it) into your ‘Downloads’ folder.
- Go to folder it’s saved in, ‘Double/Left’ click on it to begin install & follow directions.

Classic-Shell (not made by Microsoft – for Windows 10x64bit or x86 (32bit):
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ClassicShellSetup_4_3_1 (Oct.20-2017) to select it.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Save’ (Downloads it) into your ‘Downloads’ folder.
- Go into your ‘Downloads’ folder & locate the ‘ClassicShellSetup_4_3_1’ 7-Zipped file.
- ’Single/Left click’ on the ‘ClassicShellSetup_4_3_1’ 7-Zipped file to select it.
- ‘Single/Right click’ on the ‘ClassicShellSetup_4_3_1’ 7-Zipped file to begin the opening process – a pop-up menu appears.
For Windows 10 x86 (32bit) Users go to ‘Part A:’ & follow the steps.
For Windows 10 x64bit Users – go to ‘Part B:‘ & follow it’s steps.

Part A – Windows 10 x86 (32bit) Users:
- ’Single/Left click’ on ‘Open with’ – another pop-up menu appears.
- ’Single/Left click’ on ‘Choose another app’ – another window appears.
- ’Single/Left click’ on ‘More Apps’ – another window appears.
- ‘Scroll-Down’ to bottom of window, ’Single/Left click’ on ‘Look for another app on this PC’ – another window appears showing ‘Program Files’.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on the ‘7-Zip’ folder – another window appears showing the 7-Zip folder’s contents.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on the file named ‘7zFM’ – another window appears.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘ClassicShellSetup_4_3_1’ to select it.
- Then ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Extract’, another window appears stating it will place the extracted file into the ‘Downloads’ folder – ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘OK’ to accept.
- Now that window disappears, the 7-Zip window remains – ‘Single/Left click’ on the right-corner ‘X’ to close that window.
- Locate the unzipped ‘ClassicShellSetup_4_3_1’ application program – ‘Single/Left click’ on it to select it.
- While still pointing on the application program – ‘Single/Right click’ on it.
- A pop-up menu appears – ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Run as Administrator’.
- Program will begin installation process – follow directions.
- When installation completes a new ‘Start Menu Button’ should appear in the bottom left-corner – ‘Single/Left click’ on it.
- A ‘Settings Menu’ Window may appear – ‘Single/Left click’ on the style you prefer.
- ‘Single/Left click’ in the box to the left of ‘Replace Start Button’.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on a ‘Start Menu button’ you would now prefer to use.
- ‘Close’ all open windows – by ‘Single/Left clicking’ on the upper-right corner ‘X’.
- To test – ‘Single/Left click’ on the ‘Start Menu button’.
- Settings Menu Window may re-appear, if so just ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘OK’ to close. If it re-re-appears again – try another ‘Single/Left click’ on the ‘Start Menu Button’ to bring up the proper ‘Start Menu’ info window you were use to in the past.
Should the NEW ‘Start Menu Button’ still not appear – you need to do a ‘Shutdown’ of the computer by doing the following:

- ’Single/Left click’ on ‘Open with’ – another pop-up menu appears.
- ’Single/Left click’ on ‘Choose another app’ – another window appears.

- ‘Scroll-Down’ to bottom of window, ’Single/Left click’ on ‘Look for another app on this PC’ – another window appears showing ‘Program Files’.
- ‘Single/Left click’ in the top box displaying ‘Program Files’ to select it.
- Place the curser on the right-side of ‘Program Files’ & ‘Single/Left click’.
- Press the ‘Spacebar’ key once, a drop-down selection appears – ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘C:\Program Files (x86)’.
- Another grouping of differently named folders appears.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on the ‘7-Zip’ folder – another window appears showing the 7-Zip folder’s contents.
- ‘Double/Left click’ on the file named ‘7zFM’ – another window appears.
- ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘ClassicShellSetup_4_3_1’ to select it.
- Then ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘Extract’ – another window appears stating it will place the extracted file into the ‘Downloads’ folder. ‘Single/Left click’ on ‘OK’ to accept.
